On June 11, 2025, the Department of Preventive Medicine at the John D. Bower School of Population Health honored the exceptional achievements of its graduating residents in a ceremony led by Program Director Dr. Brian Williams. With friends, faculty, and future colleagues in attendance, the event marked the culmination of years of rigorous training in public health and general preventive medicine.

Rooted in a mission to educate health professionals, conduct impactful research, and provide preventative clinical care, the department proudly celebrated three graduates who exemplify these values.

Dr. Omar Hasan, a graduate of Shifa College of Medicine in Pakistan, served as Chief Resident and contributed to the inaugural preventive medicine newsletter. He presented research at the American College of Environmental and Occupational Medicine and completed a health policy fellowship. Dr. Hasan will continue his medical training in internal medicine as a PGY-2 resident at Methodist Le Bonheur in Memphis, TN.

Dr. Tasnova Malek, a graduate of Bangladesh Medical College, earned distinction for her leadership as Vice President of the School of Population Health and her commitment to adolescent health and tobacco prevention research. After graduation, she will begin an addiction medicine fellowship at Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans.

Dr. Shamima Somi, from Samaj Vittik Medical College, showcased excellence in quality improvement, research, and publication. Her work on rural flossing behaviors and health system management was recognized at multiple conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Somi will remain at UMMC, joining the Nephrology Fellowship Program.

In addition to receiving their certificates, each graduate was recognized with special awards:

  • Dr. Hasan – Chief Resident & In-Training Exam Award

  • Dr. Malek – Most Resilient Award

  • Dr. Somi – Lifestyle Medicine & Research Awards

The ceremony concluded with remarks from Department Chair Dr. Joshua Mann, who praised the graduates for their resilience, compassion, and commitment to advancing population health.

Congratulations to the 2025 graduates—your work has already made a meaningful impact, and the future of preventive medicine is brighter because of you.
